My Top 5 Vintage and Retro Mego Action Figures!

Toystalker recently attended the annual Mego Meet. Having seen so much vintage and retro (new) Mego, I thought that making a list of the five most rare and valuable vintage (US version) action figures, and the five up and coming retro Mego action figures to watch would be a great start to this blog. So here’s my list, what do you think?

Oldies:
1)      Robin – In 1972 for a short time Mego decided Robin should have a removable mask just as Batman had a removable cowl. This quickly gave way to the printed mask, so these are extremely rare. A Robin with removable mask in a box can fetch several thousand dollars. The removable cowl batman is also pricey, but for some reason very few Robin’s survived in comparison.
2)      Bruce Wayne – Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne made an appearance, possibly as a sears exclusive. He didn’t last too long, and so makes my list.
3)      Dracula – Mad Monster – Red Hair. For a reason only Mego knows while producing their Mad Monster series they made a quick detour on their Dracula production by giving him red hair. It was a short enough detour that these babies will set you back over a thousand dollars if you can find one.
4)      Frankenstein – Mad Monster – Blue Hair. The back-story on this one is that Mego’s design ran into copyright issues. As a quick fix they changed his hair to blue for a short time and then did an entire design overhaul. As a result, the production run on a blue hair Frankenstein was short.
5) Romulan – Star Trek – Don’t confuse these with  Mego’s Klingon’s, those were a dime a dozen. Out of the all the Star Trek aliens the Romulan is the hardest to find and will usually set you back in the high hundreds to a thousand.

New Up and Coming Retro Figures:
1)      Spiderman – Circle Web Suit. These are really rare as oldies and a great choice for a re-make judging by the demand. Definitely a collectible of the future.
2)       Wolverine – Mego never made one of these in the 1970’s – 80’s. It’s new, and may become a collectible in and of itself.
3)      Captain America/Thor – Thanks to the new franchise trend, these guys have gotten hot again. The old ones are doing well and these new ones may become collectible.
4)      Batman and Robin - Cowl & Mask – These were remade and like Spidey’s circle suit may become a collectible alternative to the high priced vintage ones.
5)      Batgirl – They did a nice job recreating this one and with her removable cowl she looks like a good bet as a future collectible.

So, this is my list. What do you think?

Welcome to the TOYSTALKER blog and to the world of vintage and retro-release toys!

A little about me, I’ve been into toys forever - as a kid playing with them, as a collector adding to what I love and as a seller and buyer to add and grow to my collection.

What I hope to accomplish by starting this blog is sharing some of the knowledge I’ve accumulated in the 25 years I’ve been collecting.  I plan on sharing some of the excitement and challenge of collecting vintage toys as well as reviewing the many exciting retro releases of recent years.

My areas of special interest include the Six Million Dollar Man action figures, both vintage and retro, such as Bigfoot, Bionic Woman, Fembot, and Maskatron. Also part of my collection are the great Universal Monster toys such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Wolfman by companies like Mego, Ahi, Lincoln and others. And, no toy collector’s collection would be complete without superheroes like Bateman and Spiderman, MOTU, Transformers and Mutant Ninja Turtles.

There’s a lot happening in the toy collecting world these days so stay tuned…
